Best timing on treatment during pregnancy

I’m often asked when is the best time for women to receive chiropractic treatment during their pregnancy.  As with most types of care, it depends on the situation.  If a woman is symptomatic, ie has sciatica, low back soreness, pubic symphysis pain, etc, the answer is as soon as possible.
If she does not have symptoms, and is physically comfortable, she can wait a bit.  

What exactly does chiropractic do?  

The joints of the low back and pelvis are the most frequently treated areas during pregnancy.  The large bones (ileum) of the pelvis, the sacrum and the low back are experiencing the load of extra weight as the pregnancy progresses.  The hormonal changes in the body create laxity in the ligaments throughout the entire body.  Ligaments hold bone to bone. With a woman gaining 30-50 pounds in 41 weeks, the ligaments are challenged.  
For example, in the sacroiliac joints (between the large hip bone and the sacrum, where the dimples are on a woman’s back side) the ligaments on the front and back of the pelvis are anchoring the extra weight gain.  

Chiropractic alignment ensures that the sacroiliac joints are in proper position and are flexible for the birth.  This is very important for comfort, and creates a smoother and faster delivery.   

What if I don't have any physical pain?

If there are no symptoms, I recommend being checked by a chiropractor at least 6 weeks prior to the due date.  This will allow enough time to correct any slight imbalances, misalignments, and muscle tightness that might impede labor.  Remember, having proper alignment will ensure a smoother labor process

If there is a history of injury to the pelvis or low back, getting checked sooner is a good idea, even if there are no symptoms.  For example, if she had a car accident 5 years ago, or fell onto her sacrum 7 years ago, it’s a good idea to check pelvic alignment earlier rather than later.  

Old injuries can flare up and be uncomfortable in pregnancy.  Even without symptoms, they can create patterns of tightness that might hinder the birthing process.

If you decide to seek out a chiropractor, be sure to find someone with a prenatal expertise.  Prenatal care is not part of the curriculum of study in all chiropractic colleges.  You will want to find someone who has expertise in treatment protocols that are appropriate for pregnancy.  

In my practice, I do gentle alignment, using low to non-force techniques.
I also add in cranial work, and my own hands on soft tissue massage.  
Whenever possible, I teach partners and spouses how to do soft tissue massage at home, customized to the issues we are addressing during treatment.  

Breech

If the baby is in a breech position, posterior, or transverse, I highly recommend being seen by a chiropractor who specializes in Webster Technique by 32-33 weeks of pregnancy.  This will allow enough time to encourage baby to turn without running into a stressful time frame.  I also highly recommend seeking out an acupuncturist to help with this.  The two modalities should be done in tandem.  There will also be things you can do at home to encourage turning.   

Pubic Symphysis Pain

There can be varying degrees of pain at the pubic symphysis during pregnancy.  They can be mild to severe.  Some women experience no symptoms. 

The pubic symphysis is the front of the pelvis.  The pain tends to happen when a woman is walking, turning over in bed, getting in and out of the car, or doing any motion when her legs are ‘scissored’, ligament laxity in general coupled by pregnancy hormones.  

The reason for this can range from previous injury, rapid weight gain, short physical stature, strain from a certain position (ie slipping sideways), etc.
The symphysis is where the two bones in front of the pelvis meet.  Between them is cartilage, and overlying them in the front and back are strong ligaments.  When these ligaments stretch too much, she will experience pain.   

The pubic symphysis itself can become misaligned.  This will happen when there is significant rotation in the back of the pelvis, nor not enough stability at the symphysis itself.   This type of misalignment is usually easily corrected.  One or two treatments will usually be all that’s needed.  If there is significant instability, usually from injury or rapid weight gain on a short statured woman, it may require stabilizing the symphysis until after the birth.  Often a pregnancy support belt or kinesiotape will offer enough stability to bring the pain level down.  

Post partum care

It is an excellent idea to have your pelvis checked after the birth.  You will want to make sure you have proper alignment for the healing process.  I recommend getting checked once you have rested and recuperated.  This may be a month or two after the birth.  If there are symptoms in the low back, pelvis, pubic symphysis or elsewhere, get checked as soon as you can.

Quick, easy ways to keep your family healthy!

Boosting your family’s immune system during the fall season is a great way to prevent colds and flu, educate your kids about taking care of themselves, and help everyone feel healthy and vital!

Here are a few of my favorite things to have on hand:

Vit C
boosts your white blood cell counts, helping them to fight off any exposure to viruses or bacteria. 
Dosage: 
for adults, start with 1000mg/day, this can be increased over time
for babies, 1000 mg/day taken by mama will transfer into the breastmilk
for 2 to 8 year olds, 1/4 the adult dosage
for 8-12 year olds, 1/2 the adult dosage
for 12 year olds and up, a full dose is fine


Echinacea
increases T cell production
Anti-microbial, fights virus, bacteria, fungus
best used at the beginning of symptoms, (ie during a fever or early symptoms)
Dosage: 
Adults, 1/2 to 1 full dropper 3-5x/ day


Black elderberry syrup 
Contains high levels of Vit C
Increases cytokine production
Supreses viruses
Helps with antioxidant delivery
Dosage: 
as needed


Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Dilute 1/8 tsp in warm water, use as a nasal rinse 
Clears virus, bacteria from nasal passages

Also for your NETI pot:
Here’s a great, effective blend:
1/2 tsp baking soda
Pinch of salt
1 drop (ONLY!) rosemary essential oil
Fill with warm water

This rinse is extremely effective for clearing out nasal congestion.
Use it at the start of symptoms to clear out colds very quickly!


For preventing colds, flus and bronchitis:

One of the very best ways of preventing these conditions is to keep a clear digestive tract!
The lining of your esophagus, stomach, intestines and colon is continuous. Doesn’t it make sense that the overall health of this continuous tissue is important? This is actually one of the first lines of defense in our immune system. Microvilli on this lining protect us by fighting off viruses, bacteria, and pathogens. The healthier this lining is, the fewer colds and flus your family will have.  


Best ways to keep your digestive tract clear:

Serve plenty of vegetables! Our bodies need fiber to create motility in the digestive tract.  
Beets in particular. I call them the “roto rooter” of vegetables. Beets increase bile flow, which will stimulate motion in our colon. They are great for issues of irregularity.  

Drink water. Regularly throughout the day.

Minimize sugar, processed foods, cheeses, fast food. These all slow down the pipes.

Keep warm, get enough rest, spend time doing things that you enjoy, Quality of life and peace of mind carry a lot of weight when it comes to keeping you healthy!

Other Suggestions:

Serve your family warm, delicious foods at the start of fall and winter. Chicken soup, beef stew, roasted veggies, are all nutrient dense and warming for the body. Cold exposure is one of the reasons immune systems are more susceptible to viruses. Warming foods give your family, and especially your little ones, extra protection. And they feel yummy!!

Purchase a diffuser: I bought this one, and love it! You can time it, and it also shuts off automatically when empty.

Diffuse essential oils that boost immunity. This is a very easy, inexpensive way to freshen your home, make your children’s rooms cozy, and make bedtime more inviting!

Integrative and Alternative cancer treatment centers

When a family deals with cancer treatment decisions, it is often a time of high stress, fear, lots of new information to digest in a short period of time, and decisions to be made re: the most appropriate and effective care. Traditional chemotherapy, alternative care, integrative care...  how do you know which is the right course to take?  How do you even begin to find out and evaluate what's best for you?

2010 Ruling on GMO sugar beets

In order to familiarize you with some current happenings re: GMO crops in the US, here's a link to a ruling by District Court judge Jeffrey White banning the planting and sale of sugar beet seeds in August of this year. 

Interesting that even with his ruling, requiring that the USDA conduct a thorough environmental review before approving the use of these crops, the USDA and Monsanto went ahead with the planting: until a consumer group, Earthjustice brought it to the court's attention.  It's all economics, big agribusiness, and it can seriously effect our health for generations to come.

Currently, the majority of sugar beet seeds (and therefore sugar crops) in the US are genetically modified.  This means ANY sugar product on the market containing processed sugars, corn syrup, etc. should be considered a GMO product.  You can easily protect yourself and your family by using organic sources of sweeteners, such as: organic sugar, organic agave, organic stevia, organic barley malt, etc.  Check your cupboards...  and check out the article on the ruling...

Jeffrey Smith and Dr Oz talk GMO's

For those of you who didn't have the opportunity to watch Jeffrey Smith on Dr Oz this morning re: the subject of genetically modified foods, it was very interesting and well done segment.  All sides of the issue were presented, as well as a juxtaposition by some pretty passionate experts.  Great points were presented!

The controversy surrounding GMO's is an international one.  There are 30 countries around the world that have banned GMO foods.  European countries are adding to that number as we speak.  The topic has been less discussed in the US, but expect to find it getting more and more media coverage.  It is an extremely important issue for the health of our children, their children, and the future health of the planet.
